Immediately after the operation is complete, the induced anesthesia starts to wear off, and the patient might experience numbness, pain, swelling, bleeding, and discomfort in the mouth and face. The face will also show signs of bruising. Once the patient wakes up from the surgery, the teeth might be held together using plastics to guide the jaw into the new closure. The swelling starts immediately after the operation and might persist for some days. Jaw stiffness and soreness from the breathing tube are rare, but this subsides with time.
Dentists administer pain medication to ease the pain and discomfort. The patient is advised to avoid long hot showers as they may worsen the bleeding. Ice pads may be used to minimize swelling and ease pain. For out-patients, post-op home care guidelines are given.
Recovery after the operation
The patient will also be advised to follow a liquid diet recommended by the dentist until recovery is due. A liquid diet helps ensure the operated wound is not overburdened with debris or chewing. Smoking, drinking, rigorous exercises, lifting heavy things and a lot of unnecessary activity should be avoided to prevent complications or raise blood pressure as blood vessels are still healing.
Patients who underwent complex surgery might experience altered hearing sensation if the swelling extends to the ear region. Numbness and muffled sound are common. Some joint noises are also not unusual as the jaw joint needs to get habitual with the new positioning. Nasal discharges, bleeding and pus, are also common, but the patient needs to call the dentist if it is uncontrolled and severely painful.
Sometimes the patient should expect some scarring on the face. Although the surgeries are mostly performed in the mouth, some incisions might be made on the face. The surgeon might also need to move bone from other parts of the body to add to the jaw to reshape it and provide a perfect fit.
